We all dread the move, but moving at some point is more or less inevitable. The faster you can pack up and move out, the faster you can be done with the pain of moving house. Plus, you are likely to save money by getting the job done faster.
Get packed, get out and begin the process of making your new abode a home – so check off this list of tips to help you get packed and moved out sooner rather than later!
Don’t Procrastinate
A lot of people love a deadline, or even need one to be at all productive, but when it comes to moving house you want to be sure to get packing as early as possible.
Moving house is one of those strange experiences of human behaviour where you begin to realise just how much stuff you actually have. One of the great benefits of moving house is that it allows you to conduct a great purge of your possessions – but this can take time.
So get started early, go through all your belongings and box what you don’t need to use in the immediate future but want to hold onto and part with those items that you never use and don’t see yourself needing again.
Be sure to check with your family members/ housemates that what you are throwing out isn’t something of theirs with sentimental value! And be sure to donate as much as you can. Don’t just heap everything into the trash – there’s already more than enough trash in the world.
Try to donate and recycle as much as you can, again this might take extra time to make trips to the donation bin so allowing yourself that extra time means you can do things the right way rather than hiring a skip at the last minute.
Go Full Drill Sergeant
Maybe not full drill sergeant, but being extremely organised by making lists, booking movers in Sydney and sticking to a program will make your move that much easier to stomach.
Moving is not an enjoyable experience so you will have to employ as much discipline as you can muster to stay organised and get everything done in time.
Be sure to label every box with all the items that are inside, because otherwise you will forget – don’t trust your memory because in a few crazy weeks’ time when you are looking for the wooden spoons you want to know which box they are in.
It also helps to box everything by room so that you can group the boxes into each room in your new house and unpack from there – rather than scrambling all over the house with each item that you unpack.
Use Your Stuff to Move Your Stuff
There is an art to packing. Rather than using moving paper or bubble wrap which you will have to pay for and throw out immediately after you have moved – use your clothing to wrap breakables and use you bags and suitcases to pack things into, saving on the number of boxes you need.
There are some items of furniture that will likely warrant the need for cardboard or protective wrapping, but other than that, use your jumpers, quilts, blankets, towels to wrap things rather than forking out for wrapping that will very soon become trash.
Move in Lots and Clean Before Arrival
If your new house is available, then it can make a big difference to the ease of your move to shift some of your belongings before moving day.
You may also want to conduct a big clean of your new house before moving all of your stuff – which will make it very hard to vacuum!
Try to do a thorough clean a few days before your move and then begin taking some of your belongings over a day or two early. That way, your moving day will be that much more manageable and you will be in a better frame of mind; feeling like you’ve already accomplished a certain amount of your move.
Finally, remember to keep those things you will need sooner rather than later in an easily-accessible location an at the front of the moving truck.
If you are planning on cooking as soon as you get to your new house, then pack the essential kitchen items together in a box and even keep that in your car. Stay organised and breeze through your move!
